Eco-innovative water solutions

The Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (LEQUIA) is a research group of the University of Girona (UdG) devoted to the development of eco-innovative water solutions.

Our current research lines are:

  • Design, operation and control of advanced processes for the biological treatment of industrial and urban wastewaters
  • Valorisation of resources within the water-energy nexus
  • Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS)
  • Advanced adsorption/oxidation processes for the treatment of liquid and gaseous effluents

A doctoral thesis proves the benefits of the integrated management of urban water systems (UWS) when a knowledge expert database is used

Damià Murlà has developed a new environmental decision support system (EDSS) that integrates the management of urban sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants taking into account the quality of the receiving waters. Main innovation consists of using expert knowledge database acquired through virtual simulations on systems based on real data. Results prove that this approach leads to significant benefits compared to a conventional river basin management, and encourages further research and development.
